On July 6, 2016, a mobile game launched in North America, Australia and New Zealand and within two weeks had rolled out across Europe and Japan — that would do something no piece of technology had managed before: make augmented reality part of everyday life for millions of ordinary people.
Ten years later, Pokémon Go has surpassed one billion cumulative downloads worldwide, generated an estimated $9.1 billion in revenue, and — in its anniversary year — sold out live events in Tokyo, Chicago and Copenhagen simultaneously for the first time ever. A decade on, with 30 million monthly active players, a revamped battle system and new AI features, Pokémon Go is proving that mobile AR gaming is not just a fad.
But the real story isn’t the numbers. It’s what Pokémon Go did to an industry, and whether the lessons it taught have actually been learned.
The summer that changed everything
It’s summer 2016. “One Dance” by Drake dominates the charts, Captain America: Civil War has just broken up the Avengers, and then there’s the almost dystopian yet strangely joyful sight of children and adults alike, heads down, peering keenly at their phones as they wandered through streets and parks.
Pokémon Go was developed by Niantic and The Pokémon Company and built on the foundation of Niantic’s earlier location-based game, Ingress. The AR layer was, by today’s standards, rudimentary — a camera feed with a cartoon creature overlaid on top. But the combination of GPS, the smartphone camera, and one of the most beloved entertainment franchises in history produced something nobody had anticipated: a mass participation AR event that ran for months across the entire planet.
Parks filled with players at midnight. Strangers helped each other find rare Pokémon. Businesses reported footfall increases from players hunting nearby stops. Churches, museums and landmarks became destinations. In early 2026, player numbers rose sharply again, with tens of millions returning to the game — a surge coinciding with a broader cultural nostalgia for 2016, with TikTok searches for the year increasing by 452% in the first ten days of 2026.
What it proved to the industry
Before Pokémon Go, augmented reality was a technology in search of a use case. Google Glass had come and gone. AR demos at trade shows impressed and then confused. Nobody had demonstrated that ordinary people would voluntarily engage with AR in their daily lives, let alone that they’d walk miles doing it.
Pokémon Go answered every one of those questions at once. It proved that AR gaming is not a fleeting trend but a sustainable and engaging platform. It connected millions, inspired exploration, and fostered a vibrant, active community.
It also proved that the technology itself was almost secondary. The AR layer in Pokémon Go was a thin veneer over a game that was really about GPS, community and the Pokémon franchise. Most players turned the AR camera off almost immediately because it drained the battery. The lesson — that AR earns its place when it serves something people already care about — has taken the industry a decade to fully internalise.
The $9.1 billion decade
According to AppMagic estimates, the ten years since launch have seen almost $9.1 billion generated globally between Google Play and the App Store — not including earnings from partnerships, deals, alternative app stores or the Pokémon Go web shop. Over the decade, Pokémon Go has ranked as the fifth most-lucrative game on the App Store and Google Play, behind only Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, Candy Crush Saga and Roblox.
That commercial performance funds the platform’s continued evolution. Pokémon Go now features rewarded AR ads — players see a floating balloon in-game, tap it, open their camera, and interact with a 3D object placed in their real-world space. It is advertising that actually feels like part of the game. That mechanic, almost invisible in its integration, is a more sophisticated piece of AR than most dedicated AR applications have managed.
The 10th anniversary
All three of the in-person Go Fest events this year — held in Tokyo, Chicago and Copenhagen — sold out for the first time ever, with Chicago alone setting a North American attendance record. The Tokyo event at Waterfront City set new all-time records across attendance and total distance walked by participants.
The anniversary celebration continued with Pokémon Go Fest 2026: Global, a live event running July 11-12 that was free to all players for the first time. For a game in its tenth year, the scale of that celebration is remarkable. Most mobile games don’t survive three years. Pokémon Go has built an event infrastructure capable of mobilising millions of people to show up somewhere together, reliably, and have the experience hold together when they do.
What Pokémon Go means for AR in 2026
The irony of Pokémon Go’s legacy is that its most important contribution to AR wasn’t the technology — it was the proof of concept. It demonstrated that people would accept digital objects overlaid on the physical world as part of daily life, if the reason to do so was compelling enough.
Every AR application that has followed — from surgical guidance systems to AR glasses to immersive heritage experiences in train stations — owes something to the summer of 2016. Not because Pokémon Go was technically sophisticated, but because it normalised the idea that reality could have a digital layer, and that layer could be worth engaging with.
Ten years on, the AR glasses being announced by Samsung, Apple and Meta are asking the same fundamental question Pokémon Go asked in 2016: can we make people want to look at the world differently? The answer, a decade ago, was yes. The industry is still working out how to repeat it.
