Meta Is Building a Kill Switch for Its Smart Glasses — And Here’s Why That Matters

Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have had a difficult few months. Dubbed “pervert glasses” in some corners of the press, hit with venue bans across the UK and US, and facing government scrutiny over covert recording, the company has been under sustained pressure to do something meaningful about privacy. Now, a newly reported patent suggests Meta may have a significant solution in development: a hardware kill switch that would completely disconnect the glasses from all connected functions.

What the Patent Describes

According to a patent filed by Meta back in February and recently reported by Patentlyze, Meta wants to implement a hardware mute switch within its AI glasses that would essentially cut the device off from all connected functions, including recording and AI connectivity.

This is meaningfully different from the software-level controls already on the glasses. A hardware switch that physically disconnects recording and AI functions can’t be bypassed through a software workaround — if the switch is off, the device simply cannot record, regardless of what the software says.

That would potentially give wearers the option to reassure those around them that their device is completely disconnected and unable to record in any way — which could be important because many venues are now pushing to ban Meta AI glasses from their facilities in order to protect against unauthorised recordings.

Why This Is Needed

The context matters here. Investigations in 2026 found people were secretly filmed with Meta’s smart glasses and videos were uploaded to social platforms. Contractors later reviewed intimate footage, prompting lawsuits and government inquiries. A January probe found women recorded without consent in public and clips posted online. A follow-up inquiry in February reported that contractors hired to train Meta’s AI reviewed footage that included people in bathrooms, changing clothes, sexual activity, and visible credit card information.

Earlier this month, The Guardian reported that UK restaurants and pubs are moving to ban Meta glasses in order to preserve the privacy of customers and staff, while theatres and movie chains are also implementing bans. Attendees of DEF CON 2026 were banned from wearing Meta glasses in sessions because they could be used to create unauthorised recordings.

A kill switch addresses the core anxiety directly — not by telling people the glasses won’t record, but by giving them a physical mechanism to verify it.

The Unanswered Question

The patent raises an obvious follow-up: how would anyone around the wearer know the switch was actually engaged? It remains to be seen exactly how people will be able to tell that a device has been completely disconnected, in order to make this option truly effective. A kill switch that only the wearer can verify doesn’t fully solve the trust problem — bystanders need some way to confirm the glasses are genuinely off.

That’s an engineering and design challenge Meta will need to solve before the kill switch becomes a meaningful privacy tool rather than just a reassurance feature.

The Bigger Picture

This patent arrives alongside other privacy moves Meta has already made. Earlier this summer, Meta updated its Ray-Ban glasses so that the camera is automatically disabled if the privacy LED indicator is physically tampered with — closing a loophole where some users covered the light to record covertly. The kill switch, if it ships, would go considerably further.
