Palmer Luckey — the founder of Oculus and CEO of defence technology company Anduril — has quietly teased what appears to be a pair of full AR glasses so compact they look almost indistinguishable from a regular pair of Ray-Ban Aviators. And unlike many compact glasses currently on the market, Luckey has confirmed these are the real thing.
How it started
The tease began with a photo shared on X by Lulu Cheng Meservey, showing Luckey wearing what appeared to be a clip-on attachment on his sunglasses. The caption included the phrase “Other AR glasses getting literally frame mogged” — an apparent dig at Snap’s recently unveiled Specs glasses, which generated considerable debate about whether their design was too bulky for everyday wear.
Luckey’s response
Luckey responded directly, and his reply caught the industry’s attention. He confirmed the glasses are “the real deal — no shortcuts, just really good tech in conjunction with deeply invested partners like Qualcomm, Meta Quest, and Boz” — referring to Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s CTO. When pressed further on whether the device is capable of true AR, Luckey added that the glasses feature “wide-FOV full-colour stereo” — meaning they can genuinely overlay digital content onto the real world.
That confirmation is significant. Wide field-of-view, full-colour stereo AR in a form factor this small would represent a genuine engineering breakthrough.
The big unanswered questions
Despite the excitement, significant questions remain. The most pressing is whether the device is fully standalone or relies on a tethered puck to offload battery and computing power. Given the extraordinary compactness of the design, a tethered architecture seems the most likely explanation — but neither the original photo nor a follow-up image shared by Luckey show any visible tether.
A second question is whether the glasses are designed as a modular add-on to existing off-the-shelf frames. The design strongly suggests this possibility, which would explain the regular-looking sunglasses frame — but building a modular AR attachment that can be calibrated across different frame shapes introduces substantial optical and tracking complexity.
The Anduril connection
Anduril is best known for building military technology, and the AR glasses may be connected to the company’s EagleEye project — an initiative aimed at developing AR helmets that give soldiers superhuman battlefield perception including wide-FOV night vision and enhanced situational awareness. In 2025, Anduril announced a partnership with Meta on XR technology for military applications, which aligns with Luckey’s mention of Meta as a “deeply invested partner” in the new glasses.
Whether this technology ever makes it into a consumer product remains an open question. Anduril’s primary customer is the US military, and the glasses may never be intended for public sale at all. But the fact that such compact full-AR hardware appears to exist — even in prototype form — is a genuine signal of how fast the underlying technology is advancing.
Why it matters
One of the biggest barriers to mainstream AR adoption has always been form factor. People are prepared to wear glasses, but not headsets. If a company — whether Anduril, Meta, or a future spinout — can deliver genuine wide-FOV AR in a frame that looks like normal eyewear, it would fundamentally change the market. Luckey’s tease suggests that day may be closer than many assumed.
